How to use YouTube Shorts to grow your online platform

In the fast-paced digital landscape, attention spans are shorter than ever. That’s why short-form video content has exploded in popularity—and why it's becoming one of the most powerful tools for growing a YouTube channel or an overall platform.

Whether you’re a seasoned content creator or just getting started, learning how to strategically use YouTube Shorts (videos under 60 seconds) can dramatically increase your visibility, reach, and subscriber count. Let’s explore the why, the how, and the what now of leveraging short-form video to fuel your channel’s growth.

Over the course of this past week, I decided to do a little experiment with YouTube Shorts, and the results have been far beyond my initial expectations.  I spent a little time creating several regular-length videos, then I used a tool called Opus Clip (which you can find by clicking here) to chop them up into short-form vertical videos with engaging subtitles.

After just a few days, my views increased by over 20,000 and 35 new people subscribed to my channel.  With results like that, just imagine what that channel will look like in a year if I consistently produce this kind of content week after week.  I suspect that at some point, it will hit a place of genuine momentum that will really launch the channel to new heights.

As you might suspect, that’s exactly what I’m planning to do.

Why Short-Form Video Works

1. It Meets Viewers Where They Are
The average viewer scrolls through content quickly. YouTube Shorts caters to this behavior with easily digestible videos that require minimal time commitment. They're perfect for showcasing highlights, teasers, quick tips, or funny moments.

2. The Algorithm Loves Shorts
YouTube has heavily invested in promoting Shorts to compete with TikTok and Instagram Reels. That means Shorts often receive more organic reach than long-form videos. This opens the door to new audiences discovering your content—even if they weren’t looking for it.

3. Low Barrier to Entry
Shorts don’t require elaborate production. A phone, good lighting, and a creative idea are all you need. That makes them accessible for creators with limited time or resources.  Or, as I have been doing, you can record videos with the webcam on your computer, then use AI software to automatically chop them up and create subtitles.

How to Use Shorts Strategically

Let’s move beyond the hype and into the strategy. Here’s how to effectively use short-form content to grow your channel:

1. Hook Them in the First 2 Seconds

With short-form content, you have almost no time to win attention. Use the first few seconds to present a question, bold statement, or eye-catching visual that makes viewers stop scrolling.

Example:
Instead of saying, “Today I’m going to talk about productivity tips,” open with, “Here’s the one habit that doubled my productivity in a week.”

2. Stay Focused on One Idea

Short videos should revolve around a single, clear idea. If you try to cram too much into 60 seconds, it becomes overwhelming or forgettable. One tip, one transformation, or one story snippet is enough.

3. Use Captions and Bold Text

Most viewers scroll with the sound off, especially on mobile. Captions and animated text help communicate your message even without audio. Plus, they make your content more engaging.

4. Incorporate Trends Thoughtfully

Trends can boost your visibility—but make sure they align with your channel’s niche and message. Use trending sounds, challenges, or formats while putting your unique spin on them to stand out.

I haven’t experimented with trends just yet, but from what I have seen, this really is a great way to boost engagement if you’re looking to kick-start your channel or dramatically increase your reach over a short period of time.

5. Create a Content Loop

Use Shorts to lead viewers into your long-form videos. End your Short with a compelling reason to check out the full version on your channel. Phrases like, “Want the full story? Watch the 5-minute deep dive on my channel,” can drive traffic to your main content.

I’m also using Shorts to promote my website.  At the end of some of my Shorts, I encourage viewers to visit the site for more helpful content.

Examples of High-Impact Shorts

  • Behind the Scenes – Show how you create your content or prep for a full-length video.
  • Quick Tips or Hacks – Offer bite-sized value that viewers can apply immediately.
  • Before and After – Showcase a transformation (editing, productivity, design, etc.).
  • Teasers or Trailers – Generate curiosity for an upcoming video.
  • Fast Facts – Deliver three surprising facts about your niche in 30 seconds.

What Now? Build a System

Consistency is key. If you post one viral Short and then disappear for three weeks, you’ll lose momentum. Build a content rhythm that you can realistically maintain. For example:

  • Post 3 Shorts per week tied to your long-form videos.
  • Batch create Shorts in one filming session to save time.
  • Repurpose existing content by trimming highlights from older videos.  This is the primary approach I’m taking.  I literally just upload my long-form videos into Opus Clip, then I post some of the shorts that their software auto-generates.

Also, don’t forget to review your analytics. Pay attention to metrics like watch duration, click-through rate, and subscriber growth to learn what’s working and refine your strategy.

A Few Final Thoughts

Short-form video isn’t a trend—it’s a format that’s reshaping how we communicate, teach, and entertain. YouTube Shorts offer creators a unique opportunity to reach new audiences quickly and cost-effectively. When used with intention, they can become a powerful growth engine for your channel.

Start small. Experiment often. Keep your message clear. And above all—stay consistent.

You never know which 30-second video might be the one that takes your YouTube channel to the next level.  I have been amazed with how quickly my channel is growing since starting this experiment.
